DREAM Act Protest at Romney Education Speech |
|
May 23, 2012--About a dozen
people demonstrated in support of the DREAM Act outside of the U.S.
Chamber of Commerce during presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney's speech
on education. |
|
Lucia Allain, national
coordinator for the Mid-Atlantic region for United We Dream, was inside
for Romney's speech, but was escorted out after she tried to shout a
question at Romney. The question was, "Do you support
self-deportation." Allain said Romney's speech was about dreams,
but he was not supporting her dream. She was also escorted out of
a Romney fundraising event in New York City on January 17.

Cesar Vargas (at right), an
undocumented immigrant who is founder of DRM Capitol Group, has
organized protests at a number of Romney events. Vargas stated,
"This was Romney's
opportunity to pander to Latinos, but the Dreamers were here to show
where Romney really stands on Latino issues." According to a
press release, "DRM
Capitol Group serves as a voice for undocumented youth and lobbying arm
of the dream movement. Our work ensures that undocumented youth are
represented in the halls of power and are correctly and directly
informed of the actions of Congress, Executive Agencies, and the
Courts." |
